About Our Cattle

Randall Lineback.
No farm in Vermont specializing in Heritage animals could be complete without supporting a small herd of native-to-Vermont Randall Lineback cattle and we want to do our part to help restore this endangered breed.

The Randall Lineback breed originated in New England as a mixture of several European breeds that arrived in America in the 18th and 19th Century. Later the early breeds were cross bred with dairy breeds and the Randall Lineback itself was almost lost.

Only one true Lineback herd survived and they were maintained and kept isolated by the Randall family in Sunderland, Vermont for more than 80 years. In 1985, the last heir of the Randall family passed away and the herd was dispersed. Fortunately, some were purchased by concerned individuals who wanted to conserve this breed for future generations.

The Randall Lineback is listed by the American Livestock Breeds Conservatory as critically rare and their numbers now total about 150 animals. We are currently on a waiting list with a local source and are eagerly awaiting our first Randall’s so we can devote some of our resources to helping to restore this Vermont treasure and link to the past.
